British Labs are field-bred dogs from both the UK and Ireland. They are selectively bred based on their ability to perform in retriever trials in those countries.

Why British Labs?

There are at least three distinct lines of Labradors that have been created through generations of selective breeding: the English Lab, the British Lab and the American Lab.

English Labs are typically bred for show or conformation (looks). They are generally shorter and stockier and are not bred for their retrieving abilities.

British Labs are field-bred dogs from both the UK and Ireland. They are selectively bred based on their ability to perform in retriever trials in those countries.

American Labs are field bred here in the United States. They are selectively bred based on their ability to perform in retriever trials here in the US.

These dogs have different traits because they are a product of the trials or competitions used to evaluate their ancestors in the show ring and in the field. Dogs who perform well in trials are used for breeding, while those who do not perform well are often culled. Different trials test and reward different characteristics in Labradors. The distinction between the trials in the United Kingdom and the US has created variation in the breed.

The UK Trials demand a calm and quiet dog who is happy to hunt on his own but will willingly take direction from his handler. They must be able to get on a scent and dig a wounded bird out of the most rugged cover. Dogs may sit in line for hours as they watch birds fall and other dogs work. The birds they are asked to pick may be cripples that have run hundreds of yards. The dogs are trained to do all of this without the use of an E-collar. Therefore, they must be extremely biddable to be successful in the trials.

In contrast, American Labradors are rewarded for running extremely long retrieves with pinpoint accuracy. A high-drive dog tends to excel in American hunt tests and field trials. These dogs often can handle more pressure due to the force-based training methods that have been used for generations.

While we appreciate the merits of both, the British and Irish lines of Labradors fit best with my family’s needs and preferences in the field and at home. The combination of quiet patience and an impeccable sense of smell makes these dogs very well suited to the needs of an American waterfowler and outdoor family.
